Last week a letter was published in the L&D Express concerning Transition Luton after our joint hustings with an organisation called OPT, it seems that we didn't make the difference in aims between OPT and Transition Luton very clear.
Just to clarify some of our aims we have replied with the following.
Sir, as a member of the Transition Luton group I was disappointed to read a letter from one of your readers last week concerning the hustings that we hosted recently. I'm sorry if Mr Theobald didn't enjoy the event, and I'll refrain from challenging his views on climate change, but I did want to clarify a misunderstanding about who we are. Reducing the UK population is not a Transition Towns aim - you'll find that in the Optimum Population Trust literature that was handed out by OPT members at the end of the event. OPT booked the hall, but is not affiliated with Transition Luton in any way.
Transition Luton's aims are to create a vibrant, resilient, low-carbon Luton. That means generating more of our own energy, promoting sustainable transport, supporting local business, encouraging local democracy and rebuilding community spirit. It's about re-localizing goods and services, making us less vulnerable to the recession, a future oil crisis, or a changing climate. Like the hundreds of other Transition Towns around the world, we have a vision for a healthier, happier, more sustainable town that is better prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.
All our meetings are open to everyone, so if Mr Theobald or anyone else has any doubts about our intentions, please come along and find out more in person.
