Peak Oil
Peak Oil is the term given to the point in time when the production of oil is at the highest it will ever be.
This doesn’t mean that we’ve run out of oil, but that it will be slower and more expensive to extract which will have massive implications on our current way of life.
Imagine rising petrol costs, rising food costs, rising household fuel costs, rising material costs.

Climate Change
Our world is warming dangerously and there is an near-consensus from the scientific community that it is the fault of our oil-addicted lifestyles.
This means that the way we are living is causing damage to our planet, We are pumping CO2 in to the atmosphere which is increasing the Green house effect and causing the average global temperature to rise which in turn is going unleash a number of not-positive changes in our weather and environment.
Imagine rising sea levels, increasing deserts, decreasing soil fertility, disappearing species and erratic extreme weather.

Transition Town
The Transition Town initiative is a great way that communities can explore and tackle the dual issues of Climate change and Peak oil together.
A transition town aims to increase their resilience, reduce their dependance on energy and find a new way of life that is positive for us and the world.
The process of coming together to Transition Luton is going to fun and will involve all of us. The first step is for all of us who are interested in doing something about Climate change, Peak Oil and community building to start getting to know each other, and to raise awareness across the town.

Luton gets world’s first plastic-to-plywood plant.
A firm called 2K manufacturing are bringing 30 new jobs to Luton at what’s dubbed a “revolutionary” new recycling plant.
I was really encouraged to hear about this just as Transition Luton gets started - I hope Luton will increasingly make its name as somewhere for renewable and sustainable industry!
Instead of going to landfill, 15,000 tonnes of waste plastic will instead be turned into a plywood substitute called EcoSheet for the construction and signage industries.
Ecosheet will in turn be able to be recycled at the plant too, in contrast to regular plywood which currently has to be landfilled as hazardous waste.
At the moment, we throw away 5 million tonnes of plastic, and 93% of that can’t be recycled and instead goes to landfill.
2K Manufacturing says “The 30 jobs will include supervisory roles, forklift and basic machine operation, and general admin. All successful applicants will receive ongoing training and the company is looking for people with previous experience in similar roles, self- starters who can demonstrate excellent time management and people skills and who want to work in an exciting and revolutionary new industry.”
Luton is the first plant of 11 planned sites in the UK, enabling a total of up to four million pieces of EcoSheet per year.
Omer Kutluoglu, 2k Manufacturing’s managing director, says: “In the current economic climate and with redundancies at an all time high, we are delighted to be able to be creating new jobs for the local community”.
